Well, this is pretty cool

I got an email a couple of days ago from a woman wondering if she was related to me. She found our family information on the Jewish Geneology website, and recognized some similarities to her own family tree. I wrote back and gave her some more pertinent information regarding my great-grandmother, grandmother, and great aunts and uncles. Sure enough, she wrote back and we're cousins. Long lost cousins, but cousins, never the less. Her grandfather was my grandmother's younger brother. I don't know what kind of cousins that makes us, but it's so cool to find a new relation. Best thing about it? She lives close by and grew up in our neighborhood. And she has kids! So my kids have potential cousins that they might even have a relationship with.

Isn't the internet just way cool?

That is cool. I'm already related to 1/2 the city and I can't imagine what I'd find if I dug around.

Thanks for stopping by today and in answer to your question, yes he did.

What a fabulous thing to have happen Margalit....My sister goes to that site, I believe...she has been working on the geneology of both sides of our family for many years now, and even took a trip with a group that specializes in these kinds of digs!
I hope you and your kids find these new relatives a whole lot of fun!

I'm here from the dear Michele's, today...

That is awesome! I'm not hip enough on geneology to provide any info on "what kind" of cousins that makes you...I'm thinking second or third, but really, who knows! Very cool that you all are close enough to get to know one another. All the best, and Michele says hi.

That is *way* cool...my dad has immersed himself into our family tree, and it's amazing to see how deep the roots go. He'd love to find someone online like that! (Well, I *think* he would...)

Here from Michele.
Yes the internet is very cool that way. My mom found that her first college roommate was here in the area. Now they talk at least once a week and get together every couple of months.

That is so very kool! I met a cousin a few years ago that also lives in NYC. He's from Israel, but lives in NYC. His Grandfather and my grandfather left Romania. His family went to Israel, mine to the US. His family tracked down our family and now I'm friends with this cousin in NY! They've invited me a couple of times for Passover. Very cool indeed! Hope you are having a great weekend. Michele sent me tonight.

Way cool for You to find new realtions!!

The intuitive woman is right, it's 3rd cousins. So that means your kids and her kids would be 4th cousins....but that's just technical schematics! The cool thing is you have new family!

That is really cool! I would love to do some research on my family. My husband comes from a very large family. Sometimes I think he is related to everyone in the entire town! I'm always meeting new cousins/aunts/uncles and we've been together ten years already.

Family is good!

I believe you are 2d cousins.

If your parents are siblings, you are first cousins.
If you Grandparents are siblings, you are second cousins.

If her grandparent is a 1st cousin of your parent, you are 1st cousins once removed.

Got that? I learned this at the Family Circle meetings growing up.

You are SECOND cousins, not third.

If your grandparents were sibs, that means your parents were cousins, and you are second cousins.

I love remote family, you can take 'em or leave 'em--I hope you can take this new cousin--cousins for the kids are great, always.

we've been finding some relations we want to put back. You got any room for some more?

That makes you only second cousins, not that distantly related. If first cousins are close and remain so as they bring up their children, then the second cousins are close. If not, then they might grow up not even knowing of each other. I've seen both in my family.
