Helicopter Parenting Gone Nuts

Dear mostly Asian Parents of High School Children,

To go to high school, your child must be at least 14 years old. At 14, they are capable of getting to school on their own. They do not need an entire family escort, including the younger siblings, the grandparents, and both parents. It is embarrassing for your high schooler to be accompanied by their parents. They are very able to find the school, and they should be trusted to do so. Besides, you really screw up traffic when you have to cross 11 people to accompany your child to high school.

Thank You,

A parent that allows her kids to walk all by themselves!

Dear Parents that drive their high school student to school,

Do you not see the traffic? Do you not get that you're wasting precious resources in order to get your child chauffeured to school? We have school buses for a reason. Maybe you want to consider having your child use the bus. Or walk. Or ride a bike. I can understand when the weather is frightful giving your child a lift to school. But every day? It's not like your child has a lot of exercise in school. They barely do anything in gym Wellness. They certainly get no exercise. When it takes 20 minutes to go 2 blocks to school in the morning, there are too many cars on the road. Do us all a favor, let your kid get to school on their own.

Thank you!

A parent who would rather die than take her kids to school every morning.

Gym class is now referred to as "Wellness" class? We live near a school and the traffic in the mornings is a nightmare.

PS: if you insist in humiliating your kids by walking them in every day, please at least make them carry their own backpacks.

The second time my son Sam missed the bus to high school I told him to call a cab, and told him he had to pay for it himself. He never missed the bus again.

I find your blog interesting, but disturbed about your racist comment in your most recent post. Perhaps in the Asian culture its a big deal to take their kids to school. And to criticize how they get there? Seriously? Maybe its working parents who drive their kids to school just so they can get an extra 10 minutes of catch up time w/them in the car. Maybe some have even have bought carbon offsets. Just a thought.

My kids would be immediately killed if they ever had to walk to school. It's only about a mile, and I wish they could walk, but cars will not stop for anyone trying to cross. I live in a very high-density suburb of Washington, DC. Plus, my son's backpack weighs over 35 lbs not counting his viola (He weighs about 110 at 12 yo). He takes the bus, but my daughter is afraid to, so I drive her. I feel pretty bad about that and try to make it up (the gas use) in other ways. I guess my point is, everyone's situation is different and it's hard to know what other people are dealing with.

And what if some* of these parents are being proactive and making sure their kids actually make it to school?

What if some* get hassled either walking or riding the bus?

*I will definately not go as far as to say either of these cases are the situation for all or even most of the kids being driven.

Wow - 'wellness'? What's wrong with 'gym'? or 'PE' (physical education)?

I still remember cycling three miles to school and back every day. Kids these days don't know they're born!
