Nothing says "Welcome" like chain link

Summer school started this week. It's being held at the other high school, the one that has caused this city so many headaches. The one that is, thankfully, being replaced by a new building. A new building designed by an egomaniac and his architecht and could possibly become the most expensive high school in the Commonwealth's history.

So the first day of school we drive up and I drop off the poor Girl, who will be taking the math class her piece of shit delightful high school removed her from, leaving her to take it in summer school. We all so happy about this. The doors are open, there are crowds of kids milling about, there are parents dropping off their lil' darlin's, all is well in the world.

Day two. Do you notice anything awry? A bit odd? Maybe a tad bit unwelcoming, despite the sign over the school's doors?

Yup, that would be a big long and for all intents and purposes, useless chain link fence blocking the entrance. The fence stretches way down to the street.

It stretches way up the side of the school by the construction site.

It blocks virtually nothing but the entrance. The way the kids get into and out of the school.

Welcome indeed! As if summer school wasn't depressing enough.

I'm confused. WHat is the purpose of the fence? Construction? Pedestrian safety? Preventing the odd violent offender from entering the building? Frankly, it looks like a lot of wasted money to me. It's not like they have a playground and need to prevent soccer balls from going in the street.

Daisy, I have NO CLUE as to why that fence is there. It makes no sense at all. They are doing construction on the other side of the site, WAY far away. I think they just want to make it as annoying as possible for the community.

see now, I'm delighted to see this because it makes me feel a bit better about all the completely nonsensical things I see every day in my part of the world. You know the phrase "thats a bit Irish" which is used all the time for situations as mad as that fencing, well there is a reason for that phrase!! Only I'm allowed to say it though!

Sadly that brings back memories of my grade school days. I did not live in a great neighborhood and maybe they thought the chainlink fence would keep bad people from popping in and making off with one of the kids? I don't know. But now I'm depressed. So thanks. Thanks for nothing.
