WFMW: Aam Ki Lassi recipe

Five ingredients? FIVE? That's hard. At least for me and my huge bank of recipes. I had to search long and hard for something that only had 5 ingredients, and finally came up with this delicious and refreshing drink. Non-alcoholic, good for you, and something most kids will love. Mango Lassi. Can you go wrong with that? Lucky for you, I even added an alternative, the Mango Shake.

Aam Ki Lassi

Preparation: 5-6 minutes

Serves 4-5 persons

Cuisine: North India

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups ripe mango cubes

1 cup curd/yogurt

1 tbsp sugar or 2 tbsps honey (adjust according to the sweetness of mango)

1/2 cup water (add more water for a thinner consistency)

1/2 cup crushed ice cubes

mint leaves for garnish (optional)

  1. Whip the above ingredients in a blender for a little less than a minute. Adjust the consistency of the smoothie according to the variety of mango used. If its a juicy variety, it will yield a thicker smoothie. Add more water and adjust sugar accordingly, for a thinner consistency lassi.
  2. Serve chilled, garnish with mint leaves.

Another very popular, warm weather quencher is the Mango milk shake. Prepared with minimum effort, it serves as a lazy summer meal or brunch and sure rejuvenates me on a hot day. With a strong mango flavor and undertones of cinnamon, it's cool, refreshing and low on calories.

Mango Milk Shake Recipe

Preparation: 5-6 minutes

Serves 4-5 persons

Ingredients:

2 cups ripe mango cubes

1/2 lt low fat milk

1 1/2 tbsps sugar (adjust)

pinch of cardamom pwd (optional)

1/2 cup crushed ice cubes

  1. Blend the mango pulp along with a cup of milk for 15-20 seconds.
  2. Add the remaining milk, sugar, cardamom pwd and crushed ice and blend for another 30 seconds and serve chilled.

Perfection in such hot weather!

Mangos are just now starting to show up in the market here. There still too small and too expensive, but soon. I can't wait!

I love mango shakes, I usually add a spoonful of lemonaid concentrate to mine instead of sugar, and sometimes use pineapple juice instead of milk (a la Moosewood). I never thought to put cardamom in though, that sounds delicious. I love lassis too, so I'll definitely be trying that too.

Thanks Margalit.
